Note #3

1.3 felt like it was trying way too hard to make me feel a certain way about the Shorekeeper, and I wasn’t sure how to take it because I barely knew anything about her. (But I guess that's one way to relate with an amnesiac Rover, lol.) That said, we got lore (yay!), great music, and a fancy new house.

Anyway, same old story: it felt rushed with so much lore crammed into so little time. And what should've been a key emotional moment for Rover was carried so hard by the music and cinematics, since the storytelling didn't really build up to a more impactful event.

Really wanted to like Yinlin so I was looking forward to her character quest, but it ended up being a huge disappointment.

Not going to get into too much detail, but her quest was sloppy, unnecessarily convoluted, and had poor cohesion between the story's themes and Yinlin's character. I feel like some story elements didn't mesh as well as they could have with better narrative structure, some were outright pointless, and others were entirely forgotten. There's also the inconsistent quality with the EN dub and one of Lirong's lines cut into a British voice at some point.

It was rushed, unpolished, and unfulfilling. Really felt like a rough draft that needed a lot of trimming down and refining.

Combat feels pretty good, and I'm liking the environment and creature designs so far (I love you disco turtle). I had a lot of fun!

Story is pretty straightfoward, starting off with a chosen hero, power fantasy, wish fulfillment formula, which I like personally. Although there wasn't a lot going on with the writing and the characters were just... there?

Also, this is one of the few times I'm leaning more toward the English dub than the Japanese one. I like the voice quality of a lot of the English voices more, I think they fit most of the characters better, but could probably use better direction.
